Float Tank Sydney

What is Floating?
Floating is commonly referred to as Floatation Therapy or Sensory Deprivation Therapy. It involves lying in a pod that contains a highly concentrated Epsom salt solution (500kg of magnesium sulphate) which creates the buoyancy for you to float effortlessly like in the Dead Sea. The water is heated to 35 degrees Celsius and the ambient room temperature is 28 degrees Celsius so the sensation of where the water and air begins and ends on your body dissolves and you feel like you’re floating.

The pod is both sound and light proof which gives your brain the chance to disconnect from the constant bombardment of sensory input and enhance your ability to be cognitive, mindful and introspective. The Epsom salt solution contains essential minerals that leave you feeling deeply relaxed and vibrant as the tension in your body melts away. There is simply no other technology or environment that can stimulate these evolutionary effects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there anything I need to do beforehand?
We recommend you don’t shave or wax the same day because the salt water can irritate your skin.

Do I need to bring anything?
You may want to bring a comb and contact lenses case and solution if you wear them. We provide towels, bathrobe, earplugs, body wash/shampoo/conditioner and hair dryer.

What if I’m claustrophobic?
Being in the pods is more like floating in outer space than being shut in a box. You’re always in control of the lid which doesn’t lock and even people with extreme claustrophobia have reported having no problems with their time in the pod. You can even choose to float with the lid open if it makes you more comfortable.

Can I drown if I fall asleep in there?
Anyone who says they are unable to float in pools or the ocean will be able to float effortlessly in the tank due to the high concentration of salt.  The depth of the water is 25-30cm deep, you cannot sink in this buoyant solution.

Do I have to stay in the tank the whole time?
You can get out anytime. That said, the hour usually goes by way faster than you’d expect, most people report being quite surprised when their time is up.

How big is the tank?
It’s bigger than most people realize.  The approximate dimensions are 2.6m long x 1.75m wide x 1.35m high.

What do I wear in the pod?
You don’t have to wear anything in the tank as you have your own private room equipped with your own shower, which you’ll use before and after your float. You are welcome to wear your swimmers if desired.

How do you clean the water and how is hygiene maintained?
There are five steps taken to maintain hygiene.

  1. The water in the tank consists of approximately 50% Epsom Salt (Magnesium Sulfate), which makes the water sterile, as no pathogenic organisms can survive salt concentrations above 10% like the Dead Sea.
  2.  The whole tank of water gets filtered through a one-micron size medical grade filter three times in between each float.  The filter holes are 100 times smaller than a human hair to ensure the cleanliness of the water.
  3. The water is treated daily with small amounts of hydrogen peroxide.  The water is tested daily for purity, pH, salinity and temperature.
  4. We also use a UV light to keep the water clean
  5. It’s also a policy that all clients shower before each float.

I just got my hair coloured, will the salt affect the colour?
We recommend you wait one week after hair colourings and Keratin hair treatments just to be safe.

Will my spray tan be affected by the salt water?
We recommend you wait one week after having a spray tan as it may affect your spray tan and contaminate the water.

Will my skin wrinkle like it does in the bathtub?
No, the epsom salt in the water is a natural skin emollient. Your skin will feel silky smooth afterwards.

What if I’m menstruating?
For hygiene reasons, anyone who is menstruating must take additional precautions when floating and ensure they use appropriate sanitary products (tampons or menstrual cups) to ensure no leakage during their float session as you would do in pool or spa.  However, if you generally experience raised body temperature or stomach cramps then you may wish to reschedule your appointment as you may find it difficult to get comfortable.

I’m pregnant, is it safe to float?
Absolutely, pregnant women love floating! If you have any concerns, please consult with your GP before coming in.

Can more than one person float in a tank at a time?
Only one person can float at a time, but if you’d like to bring a friend, they can have a massage or osteopathy treatment at the same time.

Can I bring my own music?
Clients can bring their own choice of MP3 format music, guided mediation or audiobooks to help in visualisation or excelled learning. This must be sent to us in advance to your booking. Please call us to arrange your booking with Haikoo in Waverley, East Sydney.

Can children use the float tank?
Although float tanks are physically safe for children, some may experience episodes of fear or claustrophobia. Some children mention that the darkness is calm and peaceful as opposed to the scary darkness of their bedrooms at night. Children under the age  of 18 may use the float tank with their parent’s supervision.
